Zukunftsberufe (Jobs for the Future): Building paths for the green workforce

The transition to a sustainable economy will require more than innovative technologies. It also depends on a new generation of skilled professionals who can help drive change across sectors such as energy, mobility, biodiversity, food and resource management. Yet many young people in Switzerland have limited exposure to sustainability-related career pathways and little understanding of how their future profession can contribute to positive environmental and social impact.

Zukunftsberufe (which translates to “Jobs for the Future”) is an innovative programme developed by MyBluePlanet that connects secondary school students with green professions, future-oriented skills and real-world learning experiences.

At a formative stage in their lives, young people aged twelve to fifteen are encouraged to explore how their interests, strengths and values can translate into meaningful careers. Through interactive workshops, networking events, company visits and practical work experiences, students gain first-hand insights into professions that contribute to a more sustainable future. They meet apprentices and professionals, learn about emerging sectors and discover educational pathways that can help them become part of the transition.

A distinctive feature of Zukunftsberufe is its ability to bridge the worlds of education and business. By bringing schools, companies and professional associations together, the programme creates opportunities for students to engage directly with employers and gain exposure to real labour market needs.

Particular attention is given to reaching young people who may face barriers in accessing career opportunities, including students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, those with language challenges and young women who remain underrepresented in many technical professions. By showcasing relatable role models and diverse career journeys, the programme seeks to broaden aspirations and expand possibilities for all participants.

Over the three-year pilot phase, Zukuftsberufe aims to engage approximately 1’500 students across at least 12 schools while developing a model that can be replicated and scaled more widely. Fourfold’s support enables MyBluePlanet to test and refine this approach, generating valuable learning about how collaboration between schools, businesses and civil society can strengthen the green workforce of the future.
