Engaging the community in sustainable food consumption

Social Cuisine is an association that grew out of a social gastronomy project promoting a food system that benefits everyone. It aims to address inequality, improve nutrition and include people from various backgrounds through complementary initiatives that raise awareness on sustainable food practices, while teaching practical skills and offering community experiences.

The core of Social Cuisine’s activities is located in the FOGO-Areal in Zürich, a centre for refugees, as well as a meeting point for the residents of the area. Here, both young migrants and locals are taught basic cooking skills, along with key principles of healthy and sustainable nutrition. The location hosts also a variety of events to engage the broader public, such as CSR initiatives for private firms as well as the FoodsaveMarkt,  a weekly produce market selling surplus vegetables and fruits at affordable prices.
In 2023, 20 asylum seekers were part of the regular kitchen group, 224 employees of 35 enterprises participated in CSR-cooking initiatives and 4,000 meals were donated.

Along with the ongoing initiatives, in 2025 Social Cuisine prepares to launch two new programs. The first one, “Plant a seed”, is a community garden in the FOGO centre, managed in collaboration with volunteers and open to visitors for guided tours and learning experiences. The second project, "Diversum", is a program run jointly with the refugees living in the FOGO centre and it aims to involve the local community beyond nutrition-related activities through game nights, flea markets, workshops, concerts and other cultural programs, in order to become a comprehensive model of community engagement and integration for other locations.
